Biographical Information

Yosvani Torres has been a pitcher for the Pinar del Rio club in the Cuban Serie Nacional and won the MVP one year.

Torres was 8-2 with a 3.29 ERA in 2007-2008. He threw two shutouts, tying Reinier Roibal and Luis Miguel Rodríguez for third in the league. That made him 11-14 with a 4.29 ERA after four seasons. In 2008-2009, the big right-hander was 7-4 with a 4.40 ERA. He improved to 7-5, 3.13 in 2009-2010, with only 26 walks in 126 2/3 innings. He was was 7th in innings, 9th in hits allowed (134), tied Luis Borroto for 7th in strikeouts (85) and ranked 10th in ERA.

In 2010-2011, Yosvani was 10-5 with a 4.01 ERA, walking 25 in 128 innings. He tied for 6th in wins, was 9th in innings and tied for the league lead with two shutouts - he was equal with Alaín Delá, Vladimir García, Noelvis Entenza, Yoelkis Cruz and Ismel Jiménez. He won four more games in the postseason, including games 3 and 6 of the finals against Vladimir García, the ace of Ciego de Ávila. In game six, the clincher, he allowed one run to wrap up the finals MVP award. He was 0-2 with a 4.15 ERA for Cuba in the 2011 World Port Tournament, dropping two games to Taiwan.

Torres was a workhorse in 2011-2012, going 9-12 with a 3.76 ERA. He was among the leaders in starts (26, 1st), complete games (6, 4th), losses (3rd behind Wilber Pérez and José Betancourt), shutouts (5, 1st), innings (167 1/3, 4th, between Odrisamer Despaigne and Cruz), hits allowed (183, 1st, 12 more than #2 Alberto Soto), runs allowed (82, 5th, between Frank Navarro and Ihosvani García), earned runs (70, 6th, between Pérez and Cruz) and homers allowed (15, tied for 5th). In 2012-2013, he was 2-3 with a 2.43 ERA.

Yosvani excelled in 2013-2014, going 15-3 with a 1.78 ERA. He led the league in complete games (5; no one else had more than two), wins (5 ahead of runner-ups Yoanni Yera, Jiménez and Yunieski García) and innings (151 2/3, 6 ahead of Norge Luis Ruiz), was fourth in strikeouts (88, between Yera and Jiménez), ranked fourth in ERA (between Yusnel Velázquez and Vladimir García) and was third in hits allowed (130, after Cruz and Jiménez). He sputtered in the finals, giving up 5 runs in losing game one to Matanzas. He was perfect for six innings in game 4 but allowed two runs in the 7th and 8th before leaving and wound up with a no-decision. In the finale, game 6, he won the clincher despite 5 runs in 5 2/3 IP. He was named Serie Nacional Most Valuable Player, the first player from Pinar del Río to do so since the great Omar Linares 21 years prior.
