Biographical Information[edit]

Yoshihisa Shiratake pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 12 years.

Shiratake was selected by the Hiroshima Carp in the second round of the 1982 NPB draft, but he spent his first three seasons primarily in the NPB Farm Leagues, only pitching 25 games combined with the big club. He joined the rotation in 1986, and he had a 4-6 record with a 3.78 ERA. Shiratake was a swingman in 1987, and he had a 5-4 record with a 3.69 ERA in 35 appearances (14 starts). He improved to 5-4 with a 2.89 ERA in 1988, then he had a 4-5 record with a 3.53 ERA in 1989.

The Carp traded him with Hideaki Takazawa and Yoshio Mizukami to the Lotte Orions for Masashi Sugimoto and Yoshihiko Takahashi. Shiratake was turned into a reliever in 1990, and he was 10-4 with a 3.33 ERA in 26 games. He relieved Hideo Nomo in 1990 NPB All-Star Game 1, and he pitched 2/3 of a shutout inning. Shiratake collected 8 saves with a 4.59 ERA in 37 games in 1991, then recorded a 4.55 ERA in 38 games in 1992. He slumped to 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA in 1993, then missed the next two seasons due to injury. The Orions released him after the 1995 season, and the Carp picked him back. Shiratake 3.64 ERA in 26 games in 1996, then he announced his retirement.

Overall, Shiratake was 39-39 with a 3.89 ERA, collected 13 saves, struck out 716 and pitched 813 2/3 innings in 12 years in NPB.
