Shien-Ming Yang was an amateur baseball infielder and pitcher. He became softball coach at his alma mater, the National Taiwan College of Physical Education, in 1982 and still held the job as of 2010. He has also been with the Taiwan national team many times. He coached for them in the 1989 Asian Championship, 1989 Intercontinental Cup, 1990 Goodwill Games, 1990 Baseball World Cup, 1990 Asian Games, 1991 Asian Championship, 1991 Intercontinental Cup, 1992 Olympics (winning a Silver Medal) and the 1993 Asian Championship. Yang coached in the 1999 Softball World Cup. He managed Taiwan in the 2002 Asian Games, 2002 Intercontinental Cup and 2003 Baseball World Cup then coached in the 2003 Asian Championship. He managed Taiwan in the 2004 Haarlem Baseball Week then was a coach in the 2004 Olympics. He was the manager for the Chinese Taipei women's national baseball team at the 2006 Women's Baseball World Cup.
