Biographical Information[edit]
Xiang Wang pitched for the Shanghai Eagles before joining the Chinese national team for the 2023 World Baseball Classic; at age 19, he was their third-youngest hurler. [1] He got a tough assignment when skipper Dean Treanor called on him to face Samurai Japan in the opener; Japan was the only two-time World Baseball Classic champion. His mound opponent was none other than the legendary Shohei Ohtani. He had a wild day of it as he walked six of eleven batters. Lars Nootbaar opened with a single then he walked Kensuke Kondoh, Ohtani and Munetaka Murakami for one run. He retired Masataka Yoshida then Kazuma Okamoto hit into a double play. He started the second by retiring Shugo Maki on a grounder. Sosuke Genda singled but Wang picked him off. He walked Takuya Kai, Nootbaar and Kondoh before Weiyi Wang came in to put out the fire. [2]
