Biographical Information[edit]
Xander Verspreet has played in the First Division and for the Belgian national team. His twin brother Brendan Verspreet has been a teammate. [1]
Xander hit .273 and slugged .323 for the 2016 Hoboken Pioneers, fielding .861 while turning 18 during the season. [2] In 2017, he moved to the Mortsel Stars and improving his batting (.302/.397/.341) and fielding (.908) while scoring 26 runs in 36 games. [3] In the 2017 European Championship U23, he was 0 for 2. [4] He was back with Hoboken for '18 and hit .289/.373/.336 while fielding .933. [5]
During 2019, he produced at a .308/.383/.393 clip with 32 RBI in 32 games, fielding .926. He was 5th in the league in RBI. [6] In the 2019 European Championship U23, he was 1 for 7 with a RBI. [7] The 2020 season was limited by the COVID-19 pandemic; he did well in the few games (6 for 16, 2B, BB, 4 HBP, 8 R, 5 RBI in 5 G; 15 TC, 0 E). [8]
Verspreet batted .354/.446/.479 and fielded .957 for the champion Hoboken team in '21. He tied former minor leaguer Thomas De Wolf for second in hits (17). [9] He played in his third European Championship U23, going 1 for 10 with a triple, two times plunked, run and a RBI. [10] He then made the Belgian senior team for the first time, at the 2021 European Championship. His first game, he pinch-hit for Robin Roevens and was retired by Italy's Matteo Bocchi. His other appearance came in the 7th/8th place game versus Croatia, replacing Dennis De Quint at third base late in the contest and grounding out against Jose Diaz. [11]
