Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Wilmer Flores is the brother of infielder Wilmer Flores. The infielder is 10 years older and has a different middle name, but both were born in Valencia, Carabobo. The younger Wilmer was signed by the Detroit Tigers as an international amateur free agent on July 10, 2020.

He began his professional career one year after siging with the Tigers, first playing with the FCL Tigers West and then after 3 games earning a promotion to the Lakeland Flying Tigers, where he was 4-3, 3.40 in 11 starts. In all he struck out 90 batters in just 66 innings. In 2022, he started the year with the West Michigan Whitecaps of the Midwest League but again earned a quick promotion, this one after 6 games, when he moved up to the Erie SeaWolves of the AA Eastern League. Shortly afterwards, he was named to the American League team for the 2022 Futures Game. He was tabbed to pitch the 7th inning at Dodger Stadium on July 16h with the AL holding a 6-3 lead and retired the first batter he faced, Logan O'Hoppe, on a ground ball, to make it 11 straight batters retired by AL pitchers. The streak ended when the next batter, Pete Crow-Armstrong, hit a double. Flores advanced him to third base with a balk, and when Joey Wiemer hit a long fly ball to deep right, on which RF Denzel Clarke made a nice catch, Crow-Armstrong came in to score on the sacrifice fly. Flores then gave way to Ken Waldichuk, who got the final out of the game.
