Biographical Information[edit]
Bill Shettsline managed for five years in the majors. He was club secretary when George Stallings lost the job managing the 1898 Philadelphia Phillies. Bill took over the job and kept it through 1902. Then he became the club's business manager and served a four-year stint as team president.
His first job in baseball had been as a ticket salesman for the Philadelphia Keystones of the short-lived Union Association in 1884. he gradually took on more responsibilities, including handling payroll, for the fledgling club, and when it went under in August, he helped facilitate the sale of two of its best players, Jack Clements and Buster Hoover, to the Phillies, landing himself a job with the Phils in the process.
In December of 1903, he was appointed the Phillies' team President on behalf of an ownership group consisting of Garry Herrmann, James Potter and Barney Dreyfuss, succeeding Potter. He stayed in the position until February of 1909 when the team was sold to a group led by State Senator Israel Durham, who took over the post.
