Biographical Information[edit]

William Galloway was born in Buffalo, NY to Canadian parents and returned to live in Dunnville, ON at the age of 6. A black player, he played on mixed-race teams in Canada, including the Woodstock Bains of the Canadian League in 1899, at a time when black players were increasingly excluded from white professional baseball. That made him the first black Canadian to play in Organized Baseball. Unfortunately, he was forced to leave the team when several teammates objected to his presence. He later played for the Cuban X-Giants, a Negro barnstorming team, as he was unable to continue in organized baseball.

In 2021, he was inducted in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame as part of its class of Canadian baseball pioneers.
