Biographical Information[edit]

Wilfrido Cordoba pitched as high as AAA. His brother Jhony Cordoba pitched and coached for the Panamanian national team. His nephew Jonny Cordoba played in the minors.

Cordoba made his pro debut in 1981 with the Greenwood Pirates, going 7-6 with 11 saves and a 1.78 ERA. In 81 innings, he allowed just 44 hits while fanning 106, though he walked 51. He was 4th in the South Atlantic League in saves. The next year, he was 5-5 with 10 saves and a 3.51 ERA for the Alexandria Dukes, with 40 hits, 39 walks and 64 K in 59 innings. He spent 1983 with the Lynn Sailors, going 2-1 with a 3.49 ERA; he walked 57 in 69 2/3 innings. He ended his US career in 1984 with the Prince William Pirates, going 8-2 with 6 saves and 1.84 ERA. He gave up only 43 hits in 78 1/3 innings and struck out 78, while his walk rate did drop somewhat (he walked 40). He then spent one year in the Mexican League, struggling at 4-4, 6.05 between the Cafeteros de Cordoba and the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos with 44 hits and 27 walks in 38 2/3 IP.

Overall, Cordoba had gone 26-18 with 27 saves and a 2.98 ERA in 169 games as a pro. In 326 2/3 IP, he gave up only 219 hits and struck out 340 while walking 214.

He was pitching coach for the Panamanian national team in the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers.
