The Greenwood Pirates began play in 1981 as an expansion team in the South Atlantic League. Affiliated with the Pittsburgh Pirates the team lasted three seasons before moving to Savannah, GA to become the Savannah Cardinals. The big league Pirates then affiliated themselves with the Macon Pirates.
