Biographical Information[edit]
Father of D.J. Davis, Wayne Davis played with the Toronto Blue Jays minor-league system from 1985 to 1988.
Davis debuted with the 1985 GCL Blue Jays and hit .197/.234/.294. He stole 18 bases in 25 tries and had 12 assists in 51 games but had only 8 walks to 64 strikeouts in 231 plate appearances. He led the Gulf Coast League in strikeouts and tied for 6th in steals. With the 1986 Florence Blue Jays, he improved his batting line marginally to .205/.264/.344. He continued to put up some gaudy numbers - 161 strikeouts in 439 at-bats. He stole 18 bases in 28 tries, drilled 16 home runs and had 11 assists in the outfield but 12 errors. He led the South Atlantic League in strikeouts, 5 ahead of Brian Morrison, while tying Pete Callas for 8th in home runs.
With the 1987 Myrtle Beach Pelicans, David had more of the same, hitting .237/.283/.411 with 21 home runs, 46 steals (in 59 tries), 78 runs, 76 RBI, 166 strikeouts (to 28 walks) and 15 errors. He was among the SAL leaders in steals (9th, between Mark Whiten and Tuffy Rhodes), RBI (7th, between Phil Clark and Juan Gonzalez), home runs (4th, behind Mike Simms, Ed Whited and Brandon Bailey) and strikeouts (one behind leader Simms).
A degenerative eye condition ended his career after he finished the 1988 season in Dunedin. He had hit .245/.301/.397 with 16 steals in 24 tries for Dunedin.
Overall, he had batted .223/.274/.371 in 403 minor league games, with 48 home runs, 98 steals (in 136 tries), only 84 walks, 482 whiffs in 1,457 at-bats, 199 runs and 165 RBI.
