Wally the Green Monster
Wally the Green Monster is the rarely seen mascot of the Boston Red Sox. He is known to jump out of the Green Monster (wall) at Fenway Park on occasion. A smaller Wally sits with Jerry Remy in the broadcast booth every Red Sox game.
He was introduced in early 1997 and was lustily booed during his first appearance, but has since become much more beloved. He wears number 97 in honor of his year of birth.
In September of 2005, he was injured in a violent dispute with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays mascot Raymond. On July 27, 2012, Wally went missing before a game with the New York Yankees, making the team suspect a dastardly deed by Yankee fans. Boston Police issued an all-points bulletin looking for a "green and furry [character] ... and sporting a permanent grin to the face on an extremely large head." It turned out to be a misunderstanding as Wally was located a few hours later, taking an unauthorized tour of his home city.
