Biographical Information[edit]

Vance Page pitched four years in the major leagues and appeared in the 1938 World Series during his rookie year.

Although there have been a number of players with the first name "Vance", Page was an early one in the majors, preceded only by Vance McIlree.

He was born in Elm City, NC and attended high school there. Through 2010, Turkey Tyson is the only other major leaguer born in Elm City. Hall of Famer Rick Ferrell, although not born in Elm City, was born in the same state as Page, less than a month later.

Vance was 32 before he came to the majors. He started in the minors in 1926 and won nearly 200 games during his minor league career. In 1929 he went 21-8 for Durham, in 1933 he was 20-15 for Hollywood, and in general he didn't move around as much as many pitchers. He spent 4 1/2 years with Hollywood and another 4 1/2 with Indianapolis, along with parts of four years at Durham and a couple at Milwaukee.

All his major league time was spent with the Chicago Cubs. Gabby Hartnett was his manager during most of that time. He appeared in Game 4 of the 1938 World Series, getting out Red Ruffing, Frankie Crosetti and Red Rolfe in the 7th inning, but in the 8th, after getting out Tommy Henrich, he gave up singles to Joe DiMaggio and Lou Gehrig. He was replaced before Bill Dickey came up. Larry French pitched to Dickey and then Tex Carleton came in to give up a hit, two walks, two wild pitches and a steal.

According to TheDeadballEra.com Page died when he fell off a barn and fractured his skull.
