Biographical Information[edit]
Starting pitcher Tyler Wagner began his professional career in 2012 after he was taken by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 4th round of the 2012 amateur draft, one pick after pitcher Drew VerHagen.
With the Helena Brewers in 2012, he went 1-4 with a 7.77 ERA in 14 games (13 starts). Improving in 2013, he was 10-8 with a 3.21 ERA in 27 games (25 starts) for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. In 2014, he had a breakout campaign, going 13-6 with a 1.86 ERA in 25 starts for the Brevard County Manatees. He was named a MiLB.com Organization All-Star, an Arizona Fall League Rising Star and to the Florida State League Mid- and Post-Season All-Star teams. He began 2015 with the Biloxi Shuckers of the AA Southern League and was 5-1, 2.01 after 9 starts when he got the call to the Show.
He made his major league debut on May 30, 2015 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, having been called up for the day from AA to make the start in order to give Matt Garza an extra day of rest. Things did not work out exactly as planned, as Wagner gave up 5 runs on 9 hits in 3 2/3 innings and had to give way to fellow rookie David Goforth in the 4th. In all, the Brewers needed to use 9 pitchers to get through the game, which went on for 17 innings, and it was Garza who was eventually given credit for the 7-6 win, after pitching five scoreless innings in his first relief appearance since 2010. Wagner was sent back to Biloxi after the game. He made two more starts for Milwaukee later in the year, losing both and putting up an ERA of 7.24 in 13 2/3 innings. He was better at Biloxi, going 11-5, 2.25 in 25 starts and 152 1/3 innings. He had the best ERA in the Southern League.
On January 31, 2016, he was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks along with SS Jean Segura in return for P Chase Anderson, 2B Aaron Hill and prospect Isan Diaz.
