Biographical Information

Tyler Funneman umpired one major league game on June 17, 2011, stepping in for an ill Tim Tschida. He was a Pacific Coast League umpire from 2009 to 2011, having started off in the New York-Penn League in 2003, Midwest League (2004), Florida State League (2005) and (2006-2008) Texas League. He had also worked in the Venezuelan League and Arizona Fall League and worked major league spring training games. He worked the 2008 Futures Game.

He had begun umpiring little league games in high school and attended Harry Wendelstedt's umpire school in Florida just after graduating. Unable to land a professional job after his first course, he worked in the Northwoods League one summer before returning to school the following year, and this time finishing high enough to begin a career in organized baseball. Still, he worked in a shipping supplies warehouse in the off-seasons to make ends meet.

After the 2011 season, he retired as an active umpire to join the Professional Baseball Umpire Corp, the organization that governs umpiring in the minor leagues, to serve as an instructor and evaluator.
