Biographical Information

The son of minor leaguer Michael Hensley, pitcher Ty Hensley was selected by the New York Yankees in the first round of the 2012 amateur draft with the 30th overall pick. He signed at the deadline for a $1.2 million bonus and made his pro debut for the GCL Yankees on July 30th. He went 1-2 with an ERA of 3.00 in his first season, pitching 12 innings in 5 games, then missed all of 2013 and the first couple of months of the following hip surgery.

When he returned to action in 2014, he got into 11 games between the GCL Yankees 1 and the Staten Island Yankees. He had no decisions and a 2.93 ERA in 30 2/3 innings. After the season, he was involved in a serious incident over the holidays, as he was beaten unconscious and received multiple facial injuries after being assaulted at a friend's home in Oklahoma after an argument over signing bonuses. He took a blow to the back of his head and suffered multiple fractures in his jaw and broken teeth when the assailant, who was described as an acquaintance of both Hensley and his friend, continued to beat up on him, kicking him in the face. The aggressor was later identified as Anthony Morales, a former linebacker at Weber State University; he was charged with aggravated assault and battery. Hensley was expected to make a full recovery.

Hensley missed the entire 2015 season due to Tommy John surgery. He then missed the entire 2016 season due to a second Tommy John surgery. After that season he was taken in the AAA phase of the 2016 Rule V Draft by the Durham Bulls of the Tampa Bay Rays organization.
