Biographical Information

Outfielder Trench Davis briefly played in the majors for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Atlanta Braves.

After attending Southern High School in Baltimore, MD, Davis was signed by the Pirates in 1980 as a 19-year-old and made his pro debut that summer with the GCL Pirates. The following summer, with the Greenwood Pirates in 1981, he hit .298, stole 31 bases, and led the South Atlantic League with 158 hits. After splitting 1983 between two teams, he led the 1984 Pacific Coast League with 53 steals while playing for the Hawaii Islanders.

Davis began 1985 back with Hawaii but had a brief cup of coffee in the majors with Pittsburgh in June, going 1-for-7 in a pair of games. However, he spent the majority of the year with the Islanders, hitting .270 in 132 games while leading the PCL with 12 triples. He played in 15 games for the Pirates in May 1986, hitting just .130, but was sent back to Hawaii late in the month to make room for rookie Barry Bonds. He hit a career-high .311 with the Islanders that summer but became a free agent following the season.

Davis was signed by the Braves in late 1986 and got into 6 games for them in 1987, going hitless in 3 at-bats. He spent most of the year with the AAA Richmond Braves, hitting .256 and stealing 44 bases. From 1988-1990 and again in 1992, he played in the Mexican League. In 1988, his .371 average was third in the league, .003 behind leader Nick Castaneda and .001 behind runner-up Nelson Barrera. He hit 18 triples and scored 94 runs for the 1989 Ganaderos de Tabasco, leading the league in triples, 5 ahead of Bernie Tatis and Vinny Castilla. He hit .359, good for 6th, between Ray Cosey and Raul Valverde. He then had 33 doubles and 84 runs a year later for the Saraperos de Saltillo, again finishing third in the LMB in average (behind Castenda and Eric Mangham at .380). He was two doubles behind leader Roy Johnson.
