Traverse City Resorters

The Traverse City Resorters played five seasons of minor league baseball. The club began play in 1910 in the West Michigan League and went on to finish 50-45 that season, a half game behind the league champion Cadillac Chiefs. Pitcher La Rue Kirby notched 13 wins while leading the league with 150 strikeouts. The circuit expanded and was named the Michigan State League the following season, and the Resorters fell to fourth place with a 62-56 record, despite featuring a pair of future big leaguers in Kirby and Bunny Brief (who led the league with 10 home runs and 97 runs scored).

In 1912, James Hamilton took over as skipper of the Resorters, and the club finished second in the league with a 79-40 record. Brief hit .353 and clubbed a league-high 13 homers, and Kirby won 18 games, with both players going on to make late-season appearances in the majors. Their lineup also included Jim Riley, who had previously played briefly in the majors, as well as Ernie Krueger, who would later play in the bigs. The following summer, the club again finished second. However, in 1914, the Resorters fell to 22-74 before withdrawing from the league on September 1st. No minor league team called Traverse City home for nearly a century afterwards, until the Traverse City Beach Bums began play in the independent Frontier League.
