Biographical Information

Pitcher Tony Chévez was the second Nicaraguan to play in the major leagues, after Baltimore Orioles teammate Dennis Martinez.

Tony pitched very well in the minors and made it to Baltimore early in the 1977 season, with Dennis reaching the big league summit the previous September. He pitched in only four games, all blowouts, and injured his shoulder in the fourth outing against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, never again appearing in the majors. "El Presidente" of course, endured for another 20 seasons at the big league level.

But Tony was the bigger star at home, and expectations had been higher for him. Tony played in the Nicaraguan amateur league as a teenager and was part of his nation's team in the 1971 Pan American Games, 1971 Amateur World Series, 1972 Amateur World Series, 1973 Intercontinental Cup and the FEMBA edition of the 1973 Amateur World Series. Just before the end of the 1973 tournament, Chévez and Martinez both had signed with the Baltimore Orioles.

Tony is the father-in-law of All-Star Jason Bartlett. He resides in Rochester, NY.
