Biographical information[edit]

Tommy John III is the son of Tommy John.

While in high school, John earned an all-state selection and was the Gatorade Minnesota State Player of the Year in 1996.

Prior to professional baseball, he attended Furman University, playing second base and pitching, and earning his M.A. and B.A. in Health and Exercise Science. In 1998, he went 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA in four games pitched. He didn't bat at all that year. In 1999, he hit .314 with nine home runs and 39 RBI in 207 at-bats. He hit .255 with five home runs and 34 RBI in 200 at-bats for them in 2001. As a pitcher, he went 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA in two games.

He played for the Tyler Roughnecks of the All-American Association in 2001, going 7-5 with a 2.85 ERA in 15 starts. For the Schaumburg Flyers of the Northern League in 2002, he went 2-4 with a 6.67 ERA in 32 games, two of which he started. In 2003, he participated in spring training with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

John now works for Synergy Fitness and Sports, Inc. He is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist and he holds a certification from the American College of Sport Medicine.

He is also the brother-in-law of Chicago Bears long snapper Pat Mannelly.
