Biographical Information[edit]

Tom Shirley was drafted in 2010.

Shirley was 6-1 with a 0.93 ERA and 96 K in 51 innings as a high school junior in 2006. He was named All-Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL). He had a 7-1, 0.97 record as a senior and was named WPIAL MVP. Going on to college, he struggled as a freshman (1-3, 7.66) and sophomore (1-4, 7.57, 46 K in 44 IP, .329 opponent average). He improved as a junior to 4-3, 4.03 with 98 whiffs in 96 innings. That got him picked by the Houston Astros in the 9th round of the 2010 amateur draft, between pitchers Jacob DeGrom and Josh Spence. The scout was Nick Venuto.

Shirley made his pro debut with the Tri-City ValleyCats on June 21 in a fine start. He went three innings, allowing one hit, one walk and no runs while fanning five.

Over the course of his first three professional seasons, Shirley had a 1.99 ERA with just 53 hits (but 32 walks allowed in 72 1/3 innings; he also struck out 96 batters. After a relative down year i n2013, he rebounded to go 7-5 with a 2.54 ERA in 30 games (16 starts) between Double A and the Triple A Oklahoma City RedHawks. In his first taste of Triple A, he was 0-2 with a 4.35 ERA. He spent his whole 2015 campaign at Triple A, but began 2016 at Double A, before being released by the Astros and signed by the Detroit Tigers.
