Gillespie was born in Iowa and grew up in the US. After college, he moved to Europe. He was 17 for 42 with 6 doubles, 6 steals, 17 runs and 4 RBI for the Bracknell Blazers in the Great Britain National League in 2002. He was with the Tübingen Hawks from 2004-2007; they played in Germany's minor leagues (Bundesliga-2) in 2004-2005. They moved up to the Bundesliga-1 in 2006 and he went 2-3 with a 1.32 ERA and 39 K to 6 BB in 34 IP. Had he qualified, he would have been second in ERA in the southern Bundesliga-1, only .10 behind leader Manuel Möller. He faded to 0-5, 7.31 with the same club in 2007 and tied Eddie Aucoin for 8th in losses (though Aucoin had 9 more wins). In 2008, Gillespie moved to Sweden's Stockholm BSK, going 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA.
Gillespie then became a coach. He was with the MLB Scouting Bureau's Scout Development Program in 2009. He was an international scout for the Oakland Athletics from 2009 to 2011 then moved to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the same role. He signed Andy Paz for Oakland and Victor Ngoepe and Claudio Scotti for Pittsburgh. He coached for Germany in the 2018 Super6.
