Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Tommy Gastall lettered in three sports at Durfee High School in Fall River, MA under the tutelage of Luke Urban. The baseball, football, and basketball star went on to follow Harry Agganis as Boston University's star quarterback. Like Agganis, he graduated from Boston University to sign a professional baseball contract. Gastall received 12 letters captaining two sports at B.U.
The Baltimore Orioles signed Gastall for a $40,000 bonus in 1955 on the recommendation of scouts Joe Cusick and Frank McGowan. He played 52 games in two years, hitting a combined .181.
On September 20, 1956 Tommy, while flying his light plane, died when he crashed in Chesapeake Bay, off Riviera Beach, MD.
