The baseball, football, and basketball star went on to follow Harry Agganis as Boston University's star quarterback. Like Agganis, he graduated from Boston University to sign a professional baseball contract. Gastall received 12 letters captaining two sports at B.U.

The Baltimore Orioles signed Gastall for a $40,000 bonus in 1955 on the recommendation of scouts Joe Cusick and Frank McGowan. He played 52 games in two years, hitting a combined .181.

On September 20, 1956 Tommy, while flying his light plane, died when he crashed in Chesapeake Bay, off Riviera Beach, MD.
