Biographical Information[edit]

Tom Funk was part of the division-winning Houston Astros team of 1986, appearing in 8 games. At age 24, he was one of the youngest pitchers on the team, whose pitching staff had an average age of 30.8.

Tom was born in Kansas City, MO. He and Russ Morman are the two major leaguers born in 1962 in Missouri. Tom went to Northwest Missouri State University, where his time overlapped with that of Todd Frohwirth. Drafted in the 28th round of the 1983 Amateur Draft, he spent his entire minor league career in the Astros organization.

Tom came to the majors while having a good year with the AA Columbus Astros, for whom he had an ERA of 2.66 that year. Most of his early outings with the Astros were successful - in particular he faced the Los Angeles Dodgers three times and the San Diego Padres twice without giving up a run. His last two outings, however, were not as good - giving up a run to the Atlanta Braves without getting an out, and giving up four runs in one inning against the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals.

He spent 1987-1988 back in the minors, splitting time each year with the Columbus team and the AAA Tucson Toros.

In all, he had a record of 37-18 in the minors, with 41 saves.
