Biographical Information

First baseman Tom Aldrich played in the Detroit Tigers farm system from 1988 to 1990.

Aldrich played baseball, hockey and soccer in high school. In college, he set Bowdoin's career records for homers (42), runs (122), hits (152), RBI (155), doubles (31), extra-base hits (81), total bases (325) and slugging (.767). He had the top three home run seasons in school history. He also played hockey for four seasons at Bowdoin and was a kicker for one year in football.

He was drafted by the Tigers in the 8th round of the 1988 amateur draft, chosen right after Tim Pugh and Mike Ignasiak. In his first professional season, with the Bristol Tigers, Aldrich hit .338/.407/.562 with 50 runs, 10 home runs, 49 RBI and 10 stolen bases (only caught once) in 63 games. He was third in the Appalachian League in average, tied for 4th in home runs, led in slugging, was 3rd in doubles, 6th in runs and 5th in RBI. He was named the All-Star DH but Player of the Year honors went instead to Vince Zawaski.

He spent 1989 with the London Tigers and experienced something of a sophomore slump, as he batted only .228/.285/.332 with nine home runs and 43 RBI in 113 games. In 1990, he played for the Lakeland Tigers (92 games, .266/.362/.351 batting line) and London Tigers (nine games, .136 average), hitting a combined .257/.357/.343 with one home run and 41 RBI in 101 games.

Overall, Aldrich hit .264/.340/.390 with 20 home runs and 133 RBI in 277 games in the minors.

In 2005, Tom was inducted into the Bowdoin College Athletic Hall of Honor.
