Biographical Information

Outfielder Toe Nash was a highly regarded prospect whose career was derailed after just one season due to legal problems

Nicknamed "Toe" due to his large feet, Nash was discovered by scout Benny Latino playing Little League ball. He did not attend high school, and Latino found him several years later playing on a semi-pro team organized by his uncle, former NBA player Hot Rod Williams. He was soon signed by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for a $30,000 bonus. He made his pro debut with the Princeton Devil Rays in 2001 and hit .240/.318/.450 with 8 home runs in 47 games. He struck out 69 times in 171 at-bats and fielded only .925 in left field. He tied for 8th in the Appalachian League in home runs and was 6th in strikeouts (between Jonny Gomes and Tim Huson). Baseball America named him the #11 prospect in the league, just behind David Wright and Gomes and just ahead of Justin Woodrow and Justin Huber.

Following the 2001 season, Nash was arrested and charged with statutory rape. He spent eight months in jail, missing the entire 2002 season. Released by the Rays, he then signed with the Cincinnati Reds. However, the Reds soon voided his contract, and he never played pro ball again.
