Biographical Information[edit]

Timur Trifonenkov (also transliterated as Timur Triphonenkov) pitched for the USSR national team and Russian national team. He was a water polo star before switching to baseball. [1]

Trifonenkov was part of Soviet teams that toured the US in 1988 and 1989. In 1989, he threw four shutout innings against the University of Maryland. [2] He was on the USSR team in the 1990 Goodwill Games. [3] In the 1993 European Championship, he was Russia's lone southpaw. He worked the 4th inning of their opening loss to Belgium, relieving Leonid Korneev and allowing a hit, two walks and two runs (one earned) while striking out one before Stepan Rubanov succeeded him. He pitched four games overall (6 IP, 1 H, 8 BB, 6 R, 6 ER, 6 K, 2 HB, 4 WP), finishing 4th on the six-man staff in ERA; he and Rubanov were their only hurlers not to get a decision. He tied Roberto Cabalisti, Christophe Gouilleux, Guillaume Coste, Roderick Hopkins and Joeri Loykens for 2nd in the event in games pitched, one behind Korneev. [4]
