Biographical Information[edit]
Tim Esmay was a college coach.
Esmay started his college career at Scottsdale Community College where he played from 1984-1985. He transferred to Arizona State University for the 1986-1987 seasons, hitting .305 and playing in the 1987 College World Series.
After graduation Esmay moved immediately into the college coaching ranks. He started as an assistant coach at ASU from 1988-1990. There is no record of him coaching during the 1991 season, then he coached for Brophy College Prep in 1992-1993. He returned to ASU as an assistant in 1994, then was a volunteer assistant at Grand Canyon University (1995) and an assistant coach at the University of Utah (1996). The following season Esmay took over as head coach of the Utes. He was 213-235-1 in 8 seasons through 2004. He was named Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1997.
Tim then became an assistant coach at ASU for the third time, serving in that role from 2005-2009. The team made the College World Series three times in that period. Esamy took over as interim head coach in December 2009 after coach Pat Murphy was dismissed. In 2010, he became the 4th head coach at ASU in a 51-year period, following Pat Murphy, Jim Brock and Bobby Winkles. His first year, the team went 52-10 and entered the 2010 College World Series ranked #1 in the nation, but went out in two games. Esmay resigned after the 2014 season from ASU, though that resignation may not have been entirely voluntary.
The Chicago White Sox hired Esmay in 2015 and he managed the Winston-Salem Dash that year. He was then an assistant coach for the Charlotte Knights in 2016, followed by three years managing the Great Falls Voyagers. Esmay led the 2018 team to a Pioneer League championship despite the team having an overall losing record.
In 2020 Esmay became the Executive Director of the Scottsdale Dirtbags, a travel ball organization. He coached one of the teams in 2021 and hired Mike Benjamin to coach another. It is unknown if Esmay continued with the Dirtbags in 2022.
In 2023 Esmay joined the Oakland Athletics organization as a hitting coach for the ACL Athletics. He took over as manager of the team in 2024, switching roles with Adam Rosales.
