A high draft pick, Terry Byron never made it to AA, let alone the majors. Assorted nagging injuries prevented him from breaking through
Byron was originally picked by the Baltimore Orioles in the 31st round of the 1997 amateur draft but he opted for college. He was then the second pick of the Florida Marlins in the 1999 amateur draft, after Josh Beckett. The right-hander made his pro debut with the Utica Blue Sox that year and did very well, going 3-0 with a 1.24 ERA, 17 hits and 31 strikeouts in 29 innings. Had he qualified, he would have led the New York-Penn League in ERA. Baseball America named him the league's #2 prospect, between Alex Graman and Tony Alvarez.
The St. Croix native fell to 1-2, 4.18 for the 2000 Kane County Cougars while battling injury. The tendinitis problems continued into 2001, when he was 1-2 with a 7.90 ERA for Kane County and had a 10.29 ERA for the Brevard County Manatees. He had pitched only 20 games in three seasons as a pro.
That winter, Byron pitched in Panama, where winter ball enjoyed a one-season revival. In 2002, he started off 3-2 with a 5.94 ERA in 31 games for the Jupiter Hammerheads. He finished the year in the Boston Red Sox chain, going 1-1 with a 2.51 ERA for the Sarasota Red Sox. With Sarasota in 2003, the Virgin Islander was 0-1 with nine saves and a 2.17 ERA ,but that was the end of his pro career.
Byron was with the Virgin Islands for the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games.
