Template talk:Today's News
It looks to me as though the news here isn't really "today's" news. Should it be renamed "Recent News" or (since that's redundant) simply "News"? --Roger 00:39, 14 Jun 2006 (EDT)
Makes sense, I've removed the Today's. --MichaelEng 06:46, 14 Jun 2006 (EDT)
Should the image always go on top? I think it should be closer to the person talked about. When it says "(pictured)", I think it should actually match up with who is being pictured. -Chisoxfan 15:57, 5 August 2006 (EDT)
The pictured person, logo, or place should be among the top two (of five) headlines. So therefore, it should at the top of the template. --MichaelEng 01:35, 7 August 2006 (EDT)
- The Buck O'Neil picture here has no release info so I removed from the main page and replaced with a book cover. If someone knowns of the release terms can they please add it (fair use?). Also, we would need the Negro League Baseball Mueseum's permission to use wikipedia's image. --MichaelEng 06:17, 9 October 2006 (EDT)

Can someone add in Thomas's 500th homer and Biggio's 3,000th hit to Today's News. I was out of town for most of Wednesday-Friday at a conference and won't get caught up before Shabbat. Maybe Sunday I'll get caught up. - --Mischa 17:54, 29 June 2007 (EDT)
Hope someone keeps a closer eye on this when I'm away on paternity break. We had three major feats this weekend and none got added for a few days. - --Mischa 12:25, 7 August 2007 (EDT)
A few questions about the new "policy" on Today's News - managerial changes and franchise records seem like legitimate topics to me. Coaching changes are far less notable but I think it is big baseball news when a MLB team changes managers, general managers or owners. - --Mischa 13:06, 17 September 2007 (EDT)
I agree with Mischa. The objective is to keep the section fresh. During a slow news period, a franchise record may be interested to note, but not when something remarkable is happening every other day. Still, we've done a good job of keeping this section current this season, with a wide variety of interesting items. --Philippe 04:06, 29 September 2007 (EDT)
I suggest changing the policy to create more flexibility and keep things cycling regularly. If we go by the currently-listed criteria, the page will not change nearly as often. - --Mischa 15:35, 30 September 2007 (EDT)
- Take the period from mid to late August of this year:
- Garret Anderson sets a Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise record with 10 RBI in a game.
- John Smoltz whiffs his 2,913th batter with the Atlanta Braves, breaking Phil Niekro's franchise record for career strikeouts.
- Johan Santana strikes out 17 batters to set a new single game record for the Minnesota Twins; the old mark had been 15.
- Closer Bobby Jenks of the Chicago White Sox ties a record set by Jim Barr when he retires the 41st consecutive batter he faced.
- Pedro Martínez strikes out Aaron Harang for his 3,000th major league strikeout. He is the 15th pitcher to reach that mark.
- Francisco Cordero saves his 40th game of the year, a new Milwaukee Brewers record. Dan Kolb and Derrick Turnbow had held the record previously.
- Since Mischa and myself are the essentially the only editors here that follow baseball outside of Major League Baseball, if we are not around, alot of the "news" becomes this sort-of-stuff; MLB team-centric news since it is a slow "MLB" news period. However, during the same time period there were champions crowned in the Serie A1 (Grosseto); the first season of the Israel Baseball League (Bet Shemesh Blue Sox); and in the Final 4 (London Mets in their first season); the site of the baseball competition at the 2008 Olympics, Wukesong Baseball Field, was opened; Tomonori Maeda hit his 2,000th hit, the first Copa Simón Bolívar was played, etc. In most years there is some sort of noteworthy pre-scheduled event every two weeks or thereabouts. For instance, in the next few months there is the World Cup, playoffs in the CPBL, KBO, Hoofdklasse, NPB, MLB, as well as the completion of many national championship competitions; opening of the Asia Series, Asian Championships; season openers of the Serie Nacional, LVBP, LIDOM, and LMP (and the lack of a season opener in the LBBPR); NPB college draft; etc. The intent of the section was intended to highlight articles with large additions, not as a news ticker. --MichaelEng (talk) 15:15, 16 October 2007 (EDT)
We should rename the section then as calling it "Today's News" implies that there is quick turnover and that many events are newsworthy. Things like 3,000 MLB strikeouts or becoming the all-time strikeout leader for a franchise over 100 years old strike me as being very notable. Many baseball fans would find them more interesting than who won some minor international league. Maeda getting his 2,000th hit was in September, BTW, and was mentioned in the Today's News section.
Also, one prescheduled event every two weeks or so means that an event will be up there for two months, which is not enough turnover IMO.
BTW, do you know a good source for international baseball news in general? I regularly check some Japanese sites (some of which mention Taiwan and South Korea too), some Dutch sites and mister-baseball's European news but miss out on some other things. - --Mischa 17:59, 16 October 2007 (EDT)
- The section was already renamed to "News" (see first comment on this page); only template is called {{Today's News}}. Why would pre-scheduled events, prevent other noteworthy news events from happening, for instance Barry Bonds still hit his record-breaking home run even though the Serie A1 finals were being played. Regarding non-MLB news, what leagues/countries you are interested in? --MichaelEng (talk) 15:50, 26 October 2007 (EDT)
I'm interested in good English-language sources for China, Mexico and Cuba among the more prominent international leagues. I need to check the Australian sources more but have a couple. Time is limited of course with the baby, though he's sleeping a bit better - 4 or 5 hours for the first stretch at night. He's past 150% of his birth weight now. - --Mischa 16:00, 26 October 2007 (EDT)
Should we add the World Series results? jj137 (Talk) 07:30, 29 October 2007 (EDT)
We should have a picture of someone involved in yesterday's major trade, presumably Cabrera or Willis. - --Mischa 09:27, 5 December 2007 (EST)
Can someone cover the George Mitchell report? There is a lot of information that needs to be updated - December 13, Today's News, dozens of player pages, etc. - --Mischa 15:28, 13 December 2007 (EST)
We need an image. Does someone have a Ramon Ortiz? - --Mischa 20:35, 9 February 2008 (EST)
Over a year since the last image request - can we get a Carl Crawford? - --Mischa 12:29, 4 May 2009 (EDT)
Today's news item about Jeanmar Gomez's perfect game was the first news item about a US minor league team since July of last year. I'll try to monitor the MiLB site more often to find newsworthy events. Kinston eagle 20:04, 21 May 2009 (EDT)
Last year, I checked MILB.com regularly, but I've been focusing more on international baseball this year. I'm glad someone else will be focusing on the minors. Of course, a minor league event has to be very notable (like a perfect game) to make the recent news page. A lot of events can go on the daily calendar pages, though. - --Mischa 07:53, 22 May 2009 (EDT)
I've been doing updates of the daily pages this season (and doing some clean-up at the same time), but I'm off on a three-week holiday this week-end. If someone can keep it up in my absence, it would be great. --Philippe 11:55, 22 May 2009 (EDT)
One "Today's News" item from July 27-August 18, then four on August 29 and August 30. Weird how events speed up. - --Mischa 20:26, 31 August 2009 (EDT)
Should we add Coghlan and Bailey as RoTYs? - --Mischa 13:02, 17 November 2009 (EST)
Does someone have Escogido's logo to add? - --Mischa 09:31, 29 January 2010 (EST)
Can anyone find a nicer copy of the Industriales logo? - --Mischa 12:44, 1 April 2010 (EDT)
Ernie Harwell's death - notable or not? - --Mischa 20:47, 4 May 2010 (EDT)
- Notable Kinston eagle 21:03, 4 May 2010 (EDT)
- Absolutely. --Philippe 21:25, 4 May 2010 (EDT)
- Definitely notable. -Chisoxfan 23:31, 4 May 2010 (EDT)
Death of Dottie Kamenshek, probably the greatest player of the AAGPBL... should it make the cut? -Chisoxfan 19:30, 22 May 2010 (EDT)
Makes sense to me. - --Mischa 10:21, 23 May 2010 (EDT)
Matt Stairs broke the record for pinch hit home runs. Notable? Alex 22:10, 22 August 2010 (EDT)
I think so. - --Mischa 08:01, 23 August 2010 (EDT)
Why won't the Caribes logo work? - --Mischa 12:29, 31 January 2011 (EST)
We don't have a Prince Fielder picture? - --Mischa 09:09, 13 July 2011 (EDT)
Should we put news about the trading deadline deals? - --Mischa 11:48, 1 August 2012 (EDT)
I'd like to add a picture for the 2012 Taiwan Series. Do we use our not very good Chih-Sheng Lin picture or our Lamigo Monkeys logo? - --Mischa 14:11, 18 October 2012 (EDT)
When a team wins the CWS or WS we typically use the logo. --Jeff 14:42, 18 October 2012 (EDT)
Dang. Just realized the 2012 Japan Series is 5 games in and I haven't even begun the page yet. Sorry I've been losing track of Japanese baseball. This is the worst I've done on the Japan Series ever. - --Mischa 17:09, 1 November 2012 (EDT)
The Pedroso image won't work for some reason. - --Mischa 11:10, 18 March 2013 (EDT)
I reversed the Liriano bit, because it's only the Sporting News Award, which is now relatively minor, and it obscured the fact there was a winner in the AL as well. --Philippe (talk) 07:50, 23 October 2013 (EDT)
The image is related to the 4th item on the list. Does anyone have a card of Durrington? - --Mischa (talk) 11:06, 21 January 2015 (EST)
Should Mejia's suspension make the page? - --Mischa (talk) 19:51, 13 February 2016 (EST)
No photos for any of the five items - highly unusual. Does someone have the logo for Leksand, Rouen or Bologna? - --Mischa (talk) 15:06, 6 September 2016 (EDT)
Should the death of Andy Marte be listed with Yordano Ventura's? It would otherwise be un-notable, but since they are both young and died on the same day in the same place in the same manner, it might be worth mentioning. Alex (talk) 15:13, 22 January 2017 (EST)
- The coincidence is rare enough that it's worth noting. Plus mlb mentioned both deaths in the Commissioner's statement. --Philippe (talk) 17:46, 22 January 2017 (EST)
No image for the first time in a couple years. Manaea? - --Mischa (talk) 20:32, 22 April 2018 (UTC)
The WBWC logo image I found isn't working and I don't know if we have any other relevant pics to run. - --Mischa (talk) 16:41, 7 September 2018 (UTC)
Need a photo. I'm sure we can find one of Yelich, Betts, Snell or deGrom. - --Mischa (talk) 17:26, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
I'll try to add bios of the NPB MVP and RoTY winners later today if time allows - lunch break is almost over but sometimes I get stuck on hold with some place for 15+ minutes. - --Mischa (talk) 17:45, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
Sorry I fell behind with the winter leagues while looking ahead to the Pan American Games Qualifier. Trying to catch up. - --Mischa (talk) 17:20, 28 January 2019 (UTC)
Not a Hall of Famer, but the passing of Bill Buckner might be worth mentioning. He owns the most famous error in baseball history and is a name well-known outside of baseball. He was even on Curb Your Enthusiasm once because of it. Alexsautographs (talk) 00:33, 28 May 2019 (UTC)
Three Hall-of-Fame pitchers have died in a couple months. - Mischa (talk) 18:50, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
Six no-hitters in a row on the Today's News. Will we get to a point where they are no longer that notable? - Mischa (talk) 12:29, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
We have no photo of Judge or Goldschmidt? That's weird - usually we have guys that notable. - Mischa (talk) 14:39, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
Wasn't sure if I should add the 2023 Taiwan Series or wait for the Game 5 recap to be added - Mischa (talk) 11:08, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Is Pete Rose's death notable enough? - Mischa (talk) 00:37, 1 October 2024 (UTC)
