1920 - The Detroit Tigers' Bobby Veach (pictured) and the New York Giants' George Burns hit for the cycle, the first time in Major League history that it happens twice on the same day. The feat will not be duplicated for 88 years.
1935 - Brooklyn Dodgers OF Len Koenecke, dropped by the team, and put off an American Airline flight in Detroit, MI for drunkenness, hires a private plane to fly him to Buffalo, NY, where he had played previously. During the flight he tries to take over the controls and gets into a fight with the pilot. He dies after the co-pilot hits him over the head with a fire extinguisher.
1968 - Yutaka Enatsu fans Sadaharu Oh to set a new strikeout record. He will finish the day with 354 and will have 401 by the end of the "Year of the Pitcher".
1988 - Pitching in the 9th inning, Jeff Reardon saves his 40th game of the season in the Minnesota Twins' 3 - 1 win over the Chicago White Sox, becoming the first pitcher ever to save 40 games in a season in each league. Reardon saved 41 for the Montreal Expos in 1985.
1996 - The Dodgers' Hideo Nomo throws the first no-hitter by a Japanese-born pitcher in major league history against the offensively-potent Rockies in Coors Field, where pitchers normally struggle.
