January 14: Today's featured birthday is that of Gary Green, who turns 63.
- 1923 - Paul Strand of the Salt Lake City Bees connects for his 290th hit of the season, a new Organized Baseball record. He will finish with 325, a mark that has never been topped.
- 1969 - Steve Carlton strikes out 19 batters, setting a new major league record, but loses a 4-3 decision to the Mets. Ron Swoboda hits two two-run homers.
- 1979 - Bob Watson (pictured) hits for the cycle. He becomes the first player to do this in both the American League and National League.
- 2013 - Wladimir Balentien hits his 56th and 57th home runs of the season, breaking the Nippon Pro Baseball record of 55 (held by Sadaharu Oh, Tuffy Rhodes and Alex Cabrera) and the Asian record of 56 (held by Seung-yeop Lee).
- 2017 - The Red Sox set a team record with 24 strikeouts in a 15-inning, 13 - 6 win over the Rays; Chris Sale strikes out nine in 5 2/3 innings, and all eight men who succeed him on the mound record at least one K.
