January 31: Today's featured birthday is that of Ted Power, who turns 70.
- 1907 - Doc White issues a walk after 65 1/3 innings in a row without allowing one. This will be the American League record until Bill Fischer breaks it 55 years later.
- 1915 - Eddie Plank (pictured) wins his 300th game. He is the first left-hander to accomplish that feat.
- 1918 - The earliest World Series to be completed, the 1918 World Series goes to the Red Sox over the Cubs. The 2-1 finale features excellent pitching from both Carl Mays and Lefty Tyler, but a two-base error by Max Flack allows Boston two runs. It is their last World Series victory of the 20th Century.
- 1985 - Pete Rose singles against Eric Show to break Ty Cobb's major league career hits record.
- 1996 - Kojiro Machida gets a hit in his ninth consecutive appearance as a pinch-hitter. This sets a new Nippon Pro Baseball record.
