January 12: Today's featured birthday is that of Paul Reuschel, who turns 78.
- 1903 - The first World Series game ever is played. Deacon Phillippe (pictured) beats Cy Young as the Pirates win, 7-3. Jimmy Sebring hits the first home run in Series history.
- 1932 - The Yankees beat the Cubs in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series. The game will go down in history for Babe Ruth's "called" home run off Charlie Root.
- 1957 - 20-year-old Kazuhisa Inao wins his 20th consecutive game, a Nippon Pro Baseball record.
- 1961 - Roger Maris slugs his 61st home run of the season, breaking Babe Ruth's 34-year-old single-season record. Maris's record will last 37 years.
- 2004 - Ichiro Suzuki surpasses George Sisler's MLB hit record of 257. He will finish the season with 262 safeties.
