January 22: Today's featured birthday is that of Ubaldo Jimenez, who turns 41.
- 1934 - 17-year-old Eiji Sawamura strikes out nine batter against a Major League All-Star team full of future Hall of Famers, but loses 1-0 on a solo homer by Lou Gehrig.
- 1950 - The Chunichi Dragons beat the Shochiku Robins, 1-0. The game takes 69 minutes, the shortest nine-inning game ever in the Central League.
- 2001 - Ichiro Suzuki wins the 2001 American League MVP. He is the second rookie ever to be named MVP, after Fred Lynn.
- 2002 - The Cuban national team wins the Intercontinental Cup after losing the two previous Cups. Barbaro Canizares is named MVP.
- 2011 - The Softbank Hawks win Game 7 of the Japan Series over the Chunichi Dragons. Hiroki Kokubo (pictured) is named Series MVP. At age 40, he becomes the oldest player to win the award.
