- 1886 - The National League adopts the use of the stolen base statistic but decides not to incorporate the American Association's rule that a batter hit by pitch is awarded first base.
- 1913 - The New York Yankees become the first Major League Baseball team to conduct spring training outside the United States, when they go to Bermuda.
- 1944 - To escape bad connotations from recent years, the Philadelphia Phillies are renamed the Philadelphia Blue Jays. The name will last just a couple of years.
- 1984 - Pee Wee Reese and Rick Ferrell (pictured) are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.
- 1994 - In his first game in a Chicago White Sox uniform, minor league outfielder Michael Jordan grounds out to pitcher Darren Oliver.
