- 1934 - Babe Zaharias, considered one of the greatest female athletes of the 20th Century, pitches a scoreless inning in spring training for the Philadelphia Athletics.
- 1937 - Under financial pressures, Gus Greenlee of the Pittsburgh Crawfords has to give away Josh Gibson and Judy Johnson in a lopsided trade with the Homestead Grays.
- 1943 - After seven straight seasons leading the Philadelphia Athletics in RBI, Indian Bob Johnson is dealt to the Washington Senators for Bobby Estalella and Jimmy Pofahl.
- 1973 - Roberto Clemente becomes the first Latin American to be elected to the Hall of Fame following a special vote organized after his tragic death on New Year's Eve.
- 2006 - In the finale of the first World Baseball Classic, Japan beats Cuba, 10-6. Daisuke Matsuzaka (pictured) gets the victory and is named MVP of the tournament.
