- 1901 - The American League officially forms as a major league to challenge the National League, which has been without a rival for a decade since the collapse of the American Association.
- 1958 - The Detroit Tigers become one of the last teams to integrate when they acquire Ozzie Virgil via trade.
- 1961 - After being a member of the International League for 32 years, the Montreal Royals' move to Syracuse, NY is approved.
- 1974 - Sam Thompson (pictured), Jocko Conlan and Jim Bottomley are selected for the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.
- 1980 - Hank Aaron refuses an award from Commissioner Bowie Kuhn honoring him for hitting his 715th home run. Aaron charges that baseball's treatment of retired black ballplayers falls far short of what is needed.
