- 1927 - Ban Johnson takes a leave of absence as president of the American League for health reasons. He had been in the midst of a major dispute with Kenesaw Mountain Landis.
- 1958 - Pete Runnels is traded to the Boston Red Sox, for whom he will win two batting titles.
- 1979 - Willie Mays (pictured) is elected to the Hall of Fame.
- 1981 - Tokuji Iida and Yoshiyuki Iwamoto are inducted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame.
