- 1871 - The Boston Red Stockings are formed.
- 1946 - In the Venezuelan League, Alex Carrasquel defeats Roy Welmaker, 3-2, in a 17-inning contest.
- 1947 - Josh Gibson (pictured) passes away. The future Hall of Famer won 12 home run titles, excluding winter leagues, where he also starred. He set home run records in both the Mexican League and Cuban Winter League.
- 1966 - Ted Williams is elected to the Hall of Fame.
- 1989 - Katsuya Nomura, the greatest catcher in Nippon Pro Baseball history, is elected to the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame.
