November 17: Today's featured birthday is that of Paul Sorrento, who turns 59.
- 1888 - Fred Dunlap signs with the Pittsburgh Alleghenies, becoming the highest-paid player in baseball with a $5,000 deal and $2,000 bonus.
- 1915 - The St. Louis Cardinals attempt to block Lee Magee (pictured)'s move to the Federal League; the attempt will fail.
- 1946 - The Chicago White Sox purchase Alex Carrasquel and Fred Vaughn from the Washington Senators.
- 1977 - Bowie Kuhn suspends Atlanta Braves owner Ted Turner for one year due to tampering charges in regards to the signing of free agent Gary Matthews.
- 1981 - Rickey Henderson steals his 42nd base for the Ponce Lions in the 1980-1981 Puerto Rican Winter League season. He breaks Carlos Bernier's 31-year-old record. It is the first of many stolen base records for Henderson.
