- 1919 - Monte Irvin is born. He will star in the Negro Leagues and Mexican League, then in the majors in the tail-end of his career after baseball's integration.
- 1957 - The United States Supreme Court decides 6-3 that baseball is the only professional sport exempt from antitrust laws. The issue arises when pro football seeks similar protection from the laws.
- 1972 - The Philadelphia Phillies acquire Steve Carlton from the St. Louis Cardinals for Rick Wise.
- 1987 - Commissioner Peter Ueberroth bans LaMarr Hoyt (pictured) for a year due to several drug-related incidents in the past year.
- 1994 - The Veterans Committee selects Phil Rizzuto for the Hall of Fame in a highly controversial move.
- 2012 - Oft-injured fireballing reliever Joel Zumaya leaves the mound in obvious pain after a batting practice throwing session; he will be diagnosed tomorrow with a torn ligament in his elbow, ending his career.
