- 1917 - The Boston Red Sox sell former star pitcher Smokey Joe Wood to the Cleveland Indians, where he will play the outfield.
- 1943 - The Texas League announces it will cease operations for World War II.
- 1966 - University of Southern California star Tom Seaver signs a deal with the Atlanta Braves; the deal will later be voided.
- 1977 - Ron Fairly (pictured) is traded to the Toronto Blue Jays and will become the first player on both major league Canadian teams as a result.
- 2003 - Commissioner Bud Selig bans the use of ephedra after it was linked to the death of Steve Bechler.
