December 18: Today's featured birthday is that of Steve Hovley, who turns 80.
- 1938 - Washington Redskins quarterback Sammy Baugh signs a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals as a shortstop and will split the season between the top two Cardinals farm teams.
- 1953 - In the Caribbean Series, trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the 9th, the Santurce Crabbers rally to beat the Havana Reds, 6-5, as Carlos Pascual and Mario Picone are unable to hold the lead. In other Series action earlier in the day, Charlie Bishop tosses a one-hit shutout to give the Venezuelan entry its first win.
- 1954 - Caguas-Guayama wins the 1954 Caribbean Series with two victories today. Corky Valentine (pictured) picks up the win in a 7-1 clincher.
- 1992 - Carlos Quintana breaks his left arm and right toe in a car accident in Caracas, Venezuela and will miss the entire season as a result.
- 2017 - Major League Baseball adopts the automatic intentional walk, no longer requiring that four pitches be thrown deliberately outside the strike zone.
