- 1888 - An indoor baseball game is played for the first time in recorded history, at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, PA, with a 6-1 score.
- 1940 - South Side Park, the original home of the Chicago White Sox, burns down.
- 1958 - Rickey Henderson (pictured) is born. He will break the all-time MLB records for stolen bases, walks and runs in a career, and for steals in a season.
- 1988 - Fernando Hernández drives in 12 runs in a game to set a Cuban Serie Nacional record.
- 2001 - Hideki Matsui of the Yomiuri Giants signs a 500-million yen deal (equivalent to $4.7 million), breaking the record for largest contract in NPB, formerly held by Ichiro Suzuki.
