• 1980 - Dave Winfield signs a ten-year, $16 million deal with the New York Yankees to become the highest-paid athlete.
• 1997 - The Florida Marlins trade Kevin Brown to the San Diego Padres for Rafael Medina, Derrek Lee and Steve Hoff as part of their post-World Series fire sale.
