- 1948 - Negro League legend Satchel Paige (pictured) makes his Major League debut hurling seven innings to lead the Cleveland Indians over the Washington Senators, 5-3.
- 1959 - For the first time, there are two Major League Baseball All-Star Games in the same year.The American League wins this second contest 5 - 3, as five home runs are hit at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
- 1960 - In an unusual trade, the Indians and Tigers exchange managers. Joe Gordon goes to Detroit and Jimmie Dykes to Cleveland.
- 1965 - Roy Hofheinz purchases a controlling stock in the Houston Astros, effectively becoming the new owner.
- 1984 - Rollie Fingers undergoes back surgery to fix a herniated disk. He misses the rest of the season after collecting 23 saves and a 1.96 ERA.
