December 25: Today's featured birthday is that of Willy Taveras, who turns 43.
- 1929 - Earl Averill becomes the first American League player to hit a homer in his first Major League at-bat. He goes deep against Earl Whitehill.
- 1940 - Bob Feller (pictured) becomes the only player in major league history to throw an Opening Day no-hitter. Luke Appling fouls off 15 pitches in a row at one point in the game.
- 1978 - Bob Forsch throws a no-hitter against the Phillies. Less than a year from now, his brother Ken will also pitch a no-hitter, making the Forsches the first set of siblings in major league history to each achieve the feat.
- 1997 - The Cubs set a National League record for the worst start to a season when they lose their 12th consecutive game. The 1884 Detroit Wolverines had previously held the record.
- 2006 - Chris Shelton becomes the first American League player to hit eight homers in the first 12 games of the season.
