Biographical Information[edit]
Taylor Garrison pitched professionally from 2012 to 2015. He reached Triple-A. His twin brother Trent Garrison also played pro ball after being a college teammate.
Taylor was 4-3 with a 4.87 ERA as a college freshman, was 1-2 with a 3.70 ERA as a sophomore and 2-2 with 3 saves and a 1.32 ERA as a junior, fanning 42 in 34 IP. The Los Angeles Dodgers took him in the 27th round of the 2011 amateur draft but he did not sign. As a senior, he was 1-2 with 11 saves, a 2.98 ERA and 52 K in 42 1/3 IP. He was 4th in the Western Athletic Conference in games pitched and second in saves. The New York Yankees chose him in the 7th round of the 2012 amateur draft, one round after Nick Goody and one round before Taylor Dugas.
Making his pro debut with the Staten Island Yankees, he was 0-2 with 11 saves and a 2.28 ERA. He tied Derek Self for 3rd in the New York-Penn League with 26 appearances on the hill and tied Nick Wittgren for 4th in saves. He was excellent in 2013, starting off with the Charleston RiverDogs (3 Sv, 0.69 ERA, 5 H in 13 IP), moving up to the Tampa Yankees (5-3, 8 Sv, 1.87) and finishing with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (1 R in 1 IP). For the year, he had a 1.73 ER and .158 opponent average. Among Yankee minor leaguers, only Tommy Kahnle (15) had more saves.
2014 was not as good though hardly terrible; he began with the AA Trenton Thunder (4-2, 2 Sv, 3.46) then he was demoted to Tampa (2.25 ERA in 10 G). In 2015, he battled injury, appearing mostly for Trenton (2-3, 4.81 in 14 G) and also with brief stints for the GCL Yankees 1 (0-2, 3.52 in 5 G), GCL Yankees 2 (1 R in 2 IP) and Tampa (0 R in 2 IP, Sv).
He then joined the Philippines national team for the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, part of a slew of ringers on the pitching staff alongside Clay Rapada and Kevin Vance most notably due to the Classic's lenient roles on who could represent a country. He was charged with the loss against New Zealand on February 12th when he gave up a three-run homer to Boss Moanaroa in the 6th inning. He had relieved Vance with a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the 6th, the bases loaded and no one out, he allowed a Tim Auty sacrifice fly, walked Daniel Bradley and then Alan Schoenberger to make it 7-6. Max Brown hit a run-scoring grounder to tie it then Moanaroa drilled his home run and Scott Campbell doubled before Daniel Lamb-Hunt was retired, a 7-4 lead having turned into a 11-7 deficit. He remained in for the 7th and walked Connar O'Gorman before retiring Moko Moanaroa. Auty singled and Bradley hit a RBI double before Jon-Jon Robles relieved him and let both inherited runners score. Garrison finished with a 40.50 ERA. For the event, only Robles and Leslie Cabiling had higher ERAs for the Philippines.
