I always heard the "like eating coffee with a fork" line as a Willie Stargell one about Steve Carlton. Did both Pops and Reggie use it?
Dunno, I've always heard it as Reggie on Ryan. --Scott 19:45, 26 Oct 2005 (EDT)
I've always heard it as line Willie Stargell used to describe hitting Koufax.
"Trying to hit Sandy Koufax was like trying to drink coffee with a fork."
One clever person used it, and many semi-clever people copied it probably --Just me 19:30, 21 Mar 2006 (EST)
Why does this article say that Ryan has the single-season strikeout record with 383. Matt Kilroy holds the record with 513. Ryan is eighth. --Umbreon9
Good catch. Too often records don't show 19th Century contributions. I amended it. - Mischa (talk) 13:17, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
For pitchers, there is a distinction made for modern and pre-modern records, because of the significant changes in both rules and practices since the 19th century. This is explicitly mentioned in the article "Record". As this is generally understood, the fact that one is talking about the "modern" record and not the "all-time" one is usually omitted.
